Cea mai mare gaură neagră din Univers cunoscută până în prezent, suficient de mare pentru a "înghiţi" întregul nostru sistem solar, a fost descoperită de cercetătorii americani în galaxia M87, aflată la o distanţă de 50 de milioane de ani lumină de Terra, informează Mediafax. Potrivit declaraţiilor astronomilor, imensa gaură neagră descoperită recent are o masă de 6,8 miliarde de ori mai mare decât cea a Soarelui, iar orizontul ei de eveniment - o limită ce reprezintă distanţa de la care nimic, nici măcar lumina, nu mai poate scăpa de atracţia gravitaţională a găurilor negre - este de patru ori mai mare decât orbita planetei Neptun.

Gaura neagră din galaxia M87 este de două ori mai mare decât credeau anterior savanţii americani. Astronomii au folosit un telescop special adaptat, Frederick C. Gillett Gemini Telescope, amplasat pe vârful Mauna Kea din Hawaii. M87 este considerată cea mai mare şi cea mai îndepărtată galaxie cunoscută până în prezent, aflată la o distanţă de 50 de milioane de ani lumină de Terra.

În opinia savanţilor americani, acea gaură neagră uriaşă s-a format prin contopirea a câtorva sute de găuri negre mai mici. Prin comparaţie, gaura neagră descoperită în centrul galaxiei noastre este de 1.000 de ori mai mică.

Savanţii de la California Institute of Technology din Pasadena, care au colaborat la acest studiu, consideră că noul "record" nu va rezista prea mult şi va fi doborât în viitorul apropiat, acest lucru fiind posibil chiar în deceniul viitor. Astronomii intenţionează să calibreze în anii viitori şi să conecteze între ele toate telescoapele din lume, pentru a crea astfel o reţea uriaşă de monitorizare a spaţiului, cu ajutorul căreia vor fi descoperite găuri negre de dimensiuni şi mai mari.
